so it's been 2012 for almost a whole month now and things are off to a great start! my new year's resolutions are to do p90x, take my vitamins, practice my handwriting and to sketch. i have taken my vitamins everyday this year! this is a big achievement since they are HUGE and taste awful and i have to take TWO of them a day. i have been doing p90x, but not everyday. i practiced my handwriting once and i really need to sketch, its been too long.

my newest visually stimulating obsession is pinterest. i'm in love. it is such a quick and easy way to share infinite ideas. i can hardly go a day without "pinning" at least one thing, but most of the time i pin tons of stuff. you can follow me here. i found the new years image above on pinterest. i also have found so many different tips and tricks for photography and photoshop, hundreds of d.i.y. inspiration is everywhere.

creative wise, i started the year off by taking my cousin laura's engagement pictures. we went around downtown salisbury to some unique locations and up in the goldhill area. here are some of my favorites:

i'm really happy with they way they turned out and i had a lot of fun shooting and editing. i have designed her invitations too but i will have to wait to show you. :)

james aunt and uncle [nikki and billy] are active in the newly formed kannapolis rollergirls roller derby team. you can read about the team here. billy coaches, nikki skates, james and i watch. nikki has tired a number of times to get me to skate but i just can't commit myself to anything right now. i was able to be involved by designing the team's logo. they wanted to incorporate a cannon because of the cannon mills relationship to the city of kannapolis. a team member sketched out a derby girl atop a cannon surrounded by the team's name. from the sketch i made these:

i cannot wait to see these ladies skating around in their t-shirts that they ordered through work [the lettered lily design studio]. we are also working on getting them vinyl decals for their cars and other promotional products.

wow, where to began?! i have been busy, busy, busy!

after graduating from uncg in may, i relocated back to my hometown of salisbury. shortly after, i started working at caniche [where i interned last summer] and began the process of revamping the shop's website and starting our email marketing campaign.

while the skeleton of the website was being prepared, i started working at the sister business of caniche, the lettered lily design studio, a graphic design studio specializing in invitations and announcements, business branding and marketing materials. I AM LOVING IT! graphic design is the direction i started to become interested toward the end of my college career, and after working in the field for several months i have really grown to love it. i started out doing small things like cutting and assembling, now i have started designing some things like invitations and holiday photocards.

meanwhile the caniche website has been up and running since october! the design of the site is complete, with the exception of changing the background on occasion, i continue to add products frequently after hours, this site has become my baby. i am very proud to say that i designed all of the graphics that you see on the site!

outside of "work" i have also been working for Reid Link Construction Company, my dad's business. i designed his new logo:

i have also been working on his website, which is still a work in progress, but has come a long way from the start. the site features photos that i have taken with my NEW camera! i also drew a house elevation for a home owner who was having a hard time visualizing what different windows and finishes would look like. after making several changes the home owner was able to make some decisions.

all in all i have also just been enjoying life, something i was missing while in school.
i went on a CRAZY adventure with leah, got a new awesome camera, and a fish-eye lens,

i turned 22 and also went to boone with james,

and few months later james and i went to see blink-182!

i was asked to make a site model which was intended to have a model of my house added to it later. i used layers of chipboard that were cut on our school's laser cutter. our laser cutter unfortunately was out of commission soon after i completed this model therefore i was not able to add the house.

on tuesday the 5th, lauren, leah and i went to the highpoint furniture market. we attended an educational event about self-marketing titled "marketing yourself by design." after the event we went over to the natuzzi showroom and spoke with edgar cabrera [iarc alumnus]. it was very nice to see him again and he gave us some great advice.

this is the final logo that our group decided on for the 3rd year's competition and for our group's marketing package. the package consisted of a business plan and graphic standards for the mock firm. i was in the graphics group and i learned that there is a lot that goes into making graphic standards and i am excited that the 3rd years picked my logo.

professional pratice : personal marketing package

Our Personal Marketing Package consisted of a cover letter, resume, portfolio, cd, a "leave behind" and a LinkedIn profile with connections. Having this assignment due early in the semester forced me to get organized and get it done but I also know that I will be forever working on this and I am still not satisfied at the state that my work is in as of now.

Participating in the "Avenues" event was a great experience and good practice for interviewing. I interviewed with Keith Hobgood from Out of Our Minds Studios and he gave me some very helpful feedback on my portfolio.

this week was awesome!
the construction that i mentioned earlier, happened this week!

the day after the construction, missie [store owner/interior designer] and i panted over the dark brown on the inside of the window with an off white. then the day after that, carla [shop manager] and i did the window display!

now the window display can be double sided!

we are working on getting some new window tint that minimizes glare

this has been the most rewarding experience. everyone is really pleased with the way it turned out and now they want to do the same thing to the other window!
it will be more challenging because of the steps and you would not be able to walk in to it, only look into as you go up the steps but it would make a huge difference.

this week we re-did the landing display twice

i didn't get photos of the first one because two of then large items [an office chair and a side table] sold before i got a chance to take pictures!

so here is the one that has lasted a few days

i also focused on a new product that we have gotten in recently, reduce water bottles
i wanted to make some signage to help explain the product while still being green.

these three signs are what i came up with! the logo was printed on the boxes the bottles were shipped in, so that part was easy. then i played around with ink transfer for the other two.

internship : week nine

this week was insane. our last day of the clearance sale got rained on, so we were stuck with all of our sale stuff with no where to put it. we quickly decided to open up a new room upstairs in the consignment shop to house all of the left over clearance items as well as consignment. this was a very long and strenuous process of moving absolutely everything! we now have four rooms, the 'bedroom', 'living room', 'hallway' and the newly opened 'kitchen'. the names of the rooms now correspond with what items go in each room. it is a very drastic and much need change.

the shop looks so much better, more open and organized. it was a very rewarding challenge to take so many different peoples items and mesh them together and create a whole.

this week was downtown salisbury's krazy klearance weekend! all the shops were having amazing sales which brings out all of the bargain hunters! saying it was crazy is an understatement! we started preparing for the sale on monday and our sale started on wednesday and ended on saturday, so all of my interning was done after hours to the website. i made some images to showcase some of our summer products for the website, here they are:

the shop is undergoing some changes and getting a makeover!
all of the exterior trim that is painted brown will get a new coat of bright pink!
along with matching bright pink and white polka dot awnings!

so first thing this week, missie [shop owner/interior designer] chooses the paint color and sends me out to get a sample. she wanted me to test the paint on the back door. she ended up spilling half the can on the floor, so half the day was spent cleaning it up. it was pretty funny and i wish i would have thought to take a picture but we were all in a panic!

also this week carla [shop manager] and i redid the landing display! this week was a challenge because we knew that we wanted to bring down the chest-of-drawers but we weren't sure what to put with it. It was a lot of trail and error with what looked good.

EDIT: the bright pink was not approved by the city :( apparently it's not historic.

internship : week six

i started this week off by pricing new items and putting them on display. quickly jean [the lady that works in the consignment shop] and i decided that the shop needed some more changes. so we spent a full day rearranging the front room.

these images are kind of overwhelming because there is soooo much stuff up there but in person our displays are focal points and having things grouped helps make it more organized.

i am also still working on website stuff, as it is an on going project.

BIG NEWS!!! i might have a construction job a head of me! missie [shop owner/interior designer] is wanting to take down the wall behind the display window so that people can see into the shop as they walk by! since my dad is a contractor [reid link construction co.] he would be helping me with the construction! but we have to see if it can be done so i'm trying to not get my hopes up.

internship : week five

after taking a weeks vacation, the shop has changed so much! they completely rearranged everything downstairs [which i am very sad that i missed] and a lot has sold upstairs and more new stuff is still coming in so there is a lot of work that needs to be done. first thing i did was price some items and got them put out on the floor. then i changed the landing display! we wanted to use items that are red, white and blue for the 4th of july.

the rest of the week was filled with mostly website work. i photographed a ton of products and then photoshoped them and added them to the website! here an example:

at the end of the week, two hours before we closed, carla [shop manager] and i decided to change an entire room upstairs. it is a major improvement!

i started the week off by helping out where help was needed. nothing new EXCEPT i did learn how to gift wrap! i have always loved wrapping and i have always been very particular about how i wrap my gifts so i really enjoyed learning new tricks that make the gifts look even better.

later in the week i was busy up stairs in the consignment shop moving things around and hanging up prints. i hung up so many things, my arm was sore but my hammering skills have greatly improved. the work that we did made the shop look so much less cluttered and the items on display can be accessed better and hopefully sell better.

i also photographed some things that are being added to the website, helped customers, and more wrapping.

this week i started to learn some new stuff! i learned how to update the website, work the cash register and check people out, make/print bar-codes, count the register and close the store and i have been observing how they gift-warp [with excellent craft] but i haven't actually wrapped anything myself yet. [maybe next week] i also photoshoped some images for the website and i even showed them some new tricks on the computer.
everything is going well and i am excited to go in everyday and learn something new! i can feel my people skills strengthening everyday.

the very first thing i did my second week of my internship was a window display for the consignment shop! i didn't do it alone though, there is an interesting man that comes in a lot who likes to take charge and changes things around. he started taking down the existing window display while i was carrying the old display stuff up stairs. he started the new display and left me to finish it. it was an interesting challenge since i was unprepared and the items he chose to display were quite bold, like the patch work quilt. below are the best photos i could get of the window. it is really hard to see what i did :( all in all the hardest part of doing this window display was being in/getting to the window. ill get some pics to explain why.

this week i also helped designed a display on the landing of the stairs using items from the consignment shop. below are photos of the display that was there and then the one that i helped with. i really enjoyed doing this display, it was fun moving things around and figuring out what looks good from all of the angles. i think we will be changing this every couple weeks. :D

i am getting ready to start my second week of my internship which is at caniche in downtown salisbury!
caniche is a home accessories, furnishings, and unique gift shop but that's only the first floor. upstairs is an high-end consignment shop where folks bring in furniture, lamps, dishes, art work and loads of other things that they are looking to sell.

my first week was awesome and i mostly was working up in the consignment shop. the first day i learned how to price items and how the system worked. day two i was busy rearranging items that had gotten cluttered and trying to make things look neater. i also tried to make sure that everything being displayed was accessible. i really like working up there because it is non stop display design, people are in and out, moving things around while i go behind them moving them around again. its also fun to look at all the items people have brought in, there is some really neat stuff. day three i worked downstairs i put price tags on some new bags that had just came in and then i got to put them on display out in the store! before i could even finish putting them out someone came in a bought two of them, so i had to put two more out. i also spent the rest of the day getting familiar with everything in the store by making sure that everything on the website, was in the store and taking note of what wasn't. the other people who work there are amazing, very helpful and kind.

this next week i hope to start working on some window display designs and table displays, which may involve some graphic design, but i hope i get to learn how to work the register!

so far i'm loving it and i'm excited about it! pictures soon!

our final project for this class was to design a furniture piece and then build a scale model using styrene

i designed a bar stool made of two simple shapes, a circle and a half circle

i really enjoyed building this model, working in the shop and experimenting with styrene. i have never worked with heat bending before and it was quite challenging but i hope i will get to make more models like this.

for our final project our studio designed shelters for the haiti and chile earthquakes in 2010

we used the panels in our studio to present our work as well as our models

i designed a very short term shelter for four people in chile

my shelter is mostly for sleeping, relaxing, and has some storage for belongings

my concept was about the thoracic cage

the thoracic cage protects vital organs much like a shelter protects its inhabitants

i wanted my shelter to have some sort of bone-like structure with a skin-like moisture barrier

a camp of these shelters would be set up our side of the city, out of the way so that the rebuilding process can run smoothly without the danger of people being in the way.

this building has housed several different businesses : furniture and undertaking, belk's, a jewelry store, and today it is being used as a gallery space

i worked with laura and lily on converting this building into a market/cafe, bike repair/custom bag shop, and apartments

we wanted to make drastic changes to the building to create a very visually interesting space

these are some images that inspired us and helped us come to a concept

laura drew this sketch and made this little sketch model and these are what shaped the whole building

our concept is about building off of old layers to make new layers while still respecting the past, stria

stria in snails is defined as : new shell material is deposited bit by bit at the shell opening, creating the new small ridge or striawith every new piece added. source

by making incisions and removing sections from the existing building, layers from the past are exposed. building upon these past layers, new structure is built which creates new layers

our design provides albemarle with a downtown destination, a market/cafe, bike repair and custom bag shop, and apartment living space. also a gathering/social space and an attraction for bikers who already make use of local bike trails

i worked on designing the apartments which is located in the far back section of the building

there are five apartments total and a shared roof top, each apartment is for one or two people. the first floor apartment would follow ADA standards. i fully designed one of the second floor apartments. the others would be some sort of variation to this design.

i wanted to stay true to the over all concept stria, so i wanted to create several visible layers by using different materials. i wanted the columns and beams to be exposed along with the existing brick to show the structural layers. since these apartments are pretty small i wanted things to be hidden away if need be, so i used sliding glass panels for the bathroom, laundry area, sleeping cove and closet doors. these mostly private rooms can closed off but you would still be able to see shadows and the layers behind the glass because it would be semi translucent. the shelves in the kitchen can also be closed off with the same kind of panel.

we were inspired by barragan’s ideas on lighting in a space. his design is simple, yet produces an intriguing lighting statement. multiple narrow windows catch light while a solid wall running parallel receive the filtered light. the window wall relies on the solid wall to be effective; without it, the impact of the light and shadow would be lost.

this structure is about pattern and the contrast between light and dark. the structure is designed to capture and celebrate the light. the light becomes part of the space; it acts as another architectural element in the interior.

catch and receive:

the building itself is simple; the arching of the ceiling allows for light to penetrate the interior at all hours of the day. panels are introduced to control the light. as the space continues to the back, new layers of panels are added in attempt to further manipulate the light and create a private, more intimate environment. the effect is a simple yet complex manipulation of light.

the panels are seen in two forms:

vertical panels make up the walls of the space. they control the light both as it rises in the morning from the east, as well as when it sets in the west. as the building reaches the rear, the panels are placed closer together, thus creating mere slits of light in the private area. the light becomes the focal point
horizontal panels replicate the arch of the structure, hanging from it to control the otherwise overpowering light that penetrates the glass ceiling. an additional layer of panel is suspended lower than the first allowing

An aperture is an adjustable opening that controls the amount of light filling a space. The Durham Fire Drill Tower would be serving the community as a photography studio that preserves the memory of the Fire Drill Tower as well as preserving memories through photographs. The floor within the tower is what acts as the aperture. The aperture is smallest on the fifth floor and largest on the first floor, conceptually controlling the light within the space.

For the majority of the semester our studio class has been working on designing a satellite showroom for Carolina Business Interiors. The showroom would be located at 332 E. Chapel Hill St. in Durham, NC, in a historic building that has had housed several previous furniture store businesses. Trying to maintain the historic integrity of the building was quite a challenge but I believe that Lauren and I achieved that in our design while still being new and modern.

Yet again Lauren and I made a lot of changes and we decided that it was best to go back to more of our original concept of funneling. This time with the changes we made I am more confident in our concept and I am pleased with this phase of the design. After talking with John he gave us some great ideas and I think he helped us see our project with new eyes and we can now look beyond it and think of new things to enhance our space.

Lauren and I changed our concept from the idea of funneling to the action that an hour glass consists of. I find it very hard to articulate concepts and I want help with it. I do feel that our idea of an hourglass has helped us make our design decisions that have shaped the space and also helped us figure out circulation patterns. I think our main focus will be to now figure out how to display more of the office systems as well as engage the walls and think more about the front entrance.

After talking to Megan and Caroline I saw a lot of similarities to mine and Lauren’s project. In their schematic design they showed how the second floor would be open to below, ours has this feature also. I think this plays a large role in their design and goes with their concept of fusion, by being able to see from floor to floor. While this over look reinforces the concept the main feature is the vertical circulation wall element that protrudes through each level of the building, from the basement to the roof. I think that this is an exciting way to go about fusing all the levels together. I am interested to see what they will come up with for the rest of the design throughout the rest of the building.

I really enjoyed the roof part of their project and how they chose to take advantage of the area available on the roof by making it into a green roof. I think that this is very unique feature for the downtown area in Durham and it is fusing nature with the building as well.

Lauren and I started our schematic design phase by blocking out the spaces and placing them in the appropriate locations. We used the approximate square footage that we calculated during the area analysis, to help us determine how much space was being used. After placing our spaces we then decided how you people would circulate within the space. Next we established the spaces that are going to be public and private.

Problem:
How do we connect the historic nature of the building and the modern aspect of the furniture being sold? As is, there is a disconnection. The solution is to design a space that fuses the two extremes together. We are dealing with the historic preservation of the downtown Durham district and the innovative, modern distinctions of CBI and the products that they stand by.

Concept:

Funneling:
Forward movement transitions from the past to the present with the intent of the present obtaining the future. Spatially the past represents the exterior and the historic preservation of downtown Durham. Upon entering the “reception area” the field of vision is narrowed by the building and its physical features. Beyond the “reception area” are the products, and the way they are displayed speaks of a flexible and non-permanent showroom. A flexible showroom leaves it open to future products and their necessary arrangements. Varying ceiling levels will aid in the funneling process, focusing the attention of customers on products with the intention of future business deals.

Narrative:
I was walking down East Chapel Hill Street in search of the new CBI satellite showroom. I came upon a brick building with their sign hanging in the window and I was surprised to see a modern, forward moving company housed in this historical downtown building. I walked in and immediately felt welcomed by light and the openness of the reception area. I began noticing the blending of two typically different styles through the materials in the space. The one thing that caught my attention significantly was the furniture and how this was the suddenly the only thing that I wanted to focus on.

after branching off from our [leah and mine’s] collaborative schematic design of the over all loft apartment complex, I began the programming stage and mapped out the spaces that I wanted my loft to have. I did this by doing this bubble diagram :

after did this I realized that each space needed some kind of storage, which got me thinking about how important storage is to our lives and the things that we store. I decided that I wanted the storage elements to be the main focus of my design and also be what divides up the spaces.
I knew I wanted the storage areas to have pushes and pulls and to keep things from getting to chaotic I knew I need a grid system and I kept with four sizes for openings : 2’x2’, 2’x1’, 1’x1’, 1’x1/2’… two squares and two rectangles. from this…

the stairs charrette is what got things rolling for me. I used the negative spaces that were created from the four sizes of openings in the storage areas, and made them into positive space on the banister. the irregular banister starts out coming up from the steps and then after the landing if flips and comes down from the loft ceiling, bring both floors together at that moment. the actual handrail itself is meant to be hidden. for the actual steps themselves…well I wanted the entrance to be under the steps so that they guide your way into the middle of the living are and then on to the kitchen. so that is why those steps are only the treads so you can see past them when you come in the door. I also wanted to take advantage of the space under the upper steps which is where I placed my bathroom.

this area is a place to leave shoes, bags, jackets, keys, etc...

I wanted my loft to have only one bathroom because I felt two was unnecessary. I wanted the loft area to be for the owner only so guest would not be going up there. so having the bathroom near the bottom of the steps would also be convenient for the owner. In the bathroom I had one “storage wall” for towels and other linens as well as paper products. the storage wraps around the other wall, where the back lit mirror is located, and makes several more shelves. not only can things be places where the red cut outs are, things can also be places on the ledges that are created by the white piece itself. the white piece continues around even more to create the shower wall where things can be places aswell. the shower door [not shown in image] is made of an opaque 3form. the bathroom door is made of the same 3form and is also a pocket door.
the countertop is made of icestone and has some drawers for underneath storage.

continuing the same idea as in the bathroom, having the storage wrap around the walls. I designed one large piece to hold the entertainment equipment as well as books and anything else. the furniture is placed in the living area around the t.v. but there is also plenty of room to move things around when the t.v. is not the main focus.

I wanted the living area, dining area and the kitchen to be all one open space, which I believe is great when entertaining.

in the kitchen it was important to me to have the sink and the cooktop facing the living area…no one wants their back turned on all the fun! the sink can also can be used from both sides, such as when in the kitchen doing dishes or simply washing your hands after dinner without having to walk all the way around. The sink and the counter are extended from the “storage wall” which is for dishes and food and anything…the refrigerator and the microwave/oven are also within this wall…the actual cabinets in the kitchen do have doors for things that might not want to be displayed at all times. these doors are made out of the same 3form as the shower door and the pocket door in the bathroom.

the work space is next to the kitchen and away from the t.v. I felt it needed to be somewhat closed off but not completely so it does not have a door that can be closed. I kept it simple in there and tried not to have too much that would be distracting…so there is enough space to store only what is needed.

the vanity area was important to have in the loft mostly because the bathroom is downstairs…the owner needs a space to get ready in their room with the rest of their things, so they are not running around like crazy…the vanity is what divides the bed area from the closet…on the back of the vanity wall is a place for hang up items. the closet has the largest storage wall and can be used for clothes or anything…extending from this is the dresser area intended for clothing.

the laundry area I have up in the loft…why not have it next to where you keep your clothes?...there is a folding area across from the machines

I feel like my idea of having the storage elements divide up the spaces as well as shape the spaces worked and I feel like it is a successful design for a hipster haven…I titled my project “living personal” because making a space your own by putting your belongings in it…is what I feel makes it yours.

at the end of this project and the end of my second year…I can say that I feel like I have learned tons. I am very proud of everything I have done this semester [last semester not so much] I feel like everything I have done fits together well…like having a concept!...but I still do not know how to sum up my concepts up into a few words so I can say, “my concept is…” Im not sure I like doing that…I think it might have been burn into our brains that concepts have to be like [winkwink]. I do like giving my projects titles and I hope that people don’t see them as my “concept”…I don’t know I hope that third year will shed more light on concepts or at least Ill feel a little more confident in the way I see them.

we began with the idea that a human's environment is almost like a skin. the environments we create contain and shelter us, but they most importantly, should be adapted to fit our needs. a person's skin grows with them, adapting and changing when it needs to, containing the life inside it. our housing facility stands as a skeleton, something that once had another purpose, and is being brought back to life.

designing a bathing space for handicapped people who are confined to wheelchairs is not an easy task…there are many codes that we had to research and abide by while designing our space for the use of special submersible wheelchairs at a special needs spa. we were asked to research a distinct cultural bathing experience.

I chose to research the roman baths which consisted of several baths within it such as cold, warm, and hot baths as well as other areas to exercise and read. the roman’s used these baths as places to gather and socialize and it was a place where most people were able to come and were waited on by attendants. the bathers would apply oil to their skin and then later scraped it off with some form of scraper.

this exfoliating technique inspired me to look further into exfoliation and ways that it is done today. I came across the popular dead sea salt/mud scrub that is sold for outrageous prices. I did some research and it turns out that the scrub [which comes straight from the dead sea] can do wonders for your skin. so with exfoliation and the dead sea in mind I knew that I wanted my spa to be a place where exfoliation with the dead sea scrub took place. I then looked into the dead seas location more, [between israel and jordan] and found that the climate is very dry and arid and there is very little plant life in the surrounding area. the dead sea is also at the lowest elevation on earth, therefore the sun’s harmful uv rays take longer to harm your skin meaning you can stay out in the sun longer.

with all of this research in mind I started designing my space to be located in a flat, dry climate such as in the arizona desert. I wanted my spa to be used by everyone not only handicapped people, and for it to be all about exfoliation and the process of polishing away the rough dead skin and revealing the new soft skin. when the bathers arrive they first come into the check-in/changing rooms/bath rooms area. once they have changed into their spa attire and gotten into a spa provided wheelchair, they will make their way down the ramp into to water. when they get to the bottom of the ramp there is a flat landing that they leave their wheelchair on [that is later taken away by an attendant] as they are helped into a relaxation floatation device [see detail drawing[1]] and then they receive a exfoliation treatment by an attendant in the uncovered section of the bath. the treatment takes place in the deeper area of the bath [water is 3' deep] which is the floatation device is needed. after the treatment is complete the bather can move into the shade, which is the shallow end of the bath and bather has the choice to stay in the float or to sit right on the bottom surface with is made of the same dead sea sat/mud scrub. this shaded are is devoted to rest and relaxation. the shaded area is made by the large over head “arches” that are meant to create a cave like structure. from the outside the structure appears to be the same size throughout but then revels itself as a “cave”. the “arches” form a gradient in color as well as the spacing in between them, going from darkest to lightest, furthest spaces apart to closest. the sun and shade areas of the bath are supposed to be like the roman baths with the hot and cold to open the pours and then close them. when the bather decided that they are ready to leave and attendant then brings back the wheelchair and it is lowered into the water [see detail drawing [2]] where they can easily get back in and be lifted out and then can proceed back into the changing area. I wanted to show the process of exfoliation by them not coming out of the bath the same way they came in. another thing that shows this process is the rocks that line the space between the check-in area and the bath. the rocks start off large and jagged and then progressively get smaller and smoother, becoming polished and more exfoliated.

although I have never given blood (mainly because I am not good with needles) I felt that this was an important issue that I wanted to address. the assignment was to look at the old wpa posters for inspiration to make our own modern day wpa poster.

these are the wpa posters that inspired mine. I wanted the text to be at the bottom and have a solid color down there and then I wanted the top to be really simple and stand out and get the point across.

roman baths consisted of several actual baths such as cold, warm, and hot baths as well as other areas to exercise and read. These baths were not only a place to clean yourself but also a place to socialize. Baths were not free there was an admissions fee but it was inexpensive so even the poor could attend. Slaves could not bathe at the baths but they were often taken in by there masters so that they could tend to them.

I see these baths being universal in the way that most everyone could attend. I also like the fact that there were attendants to help the bathers, this is something that I had in mind about my spa. To add to what I had in mind for my spa is also having several kinds of areas for the bathers, maybe hot and cold or inside and outside, not sure yet...

I also looked into Italian Grotta or Grotto which is a natural or artificial cave that is often flooded or filled with water

a place to dine : turning the table

Throughout this project I had somethings in mind that I felt were important and I wanted them to be present throughout my design and they are what helped shape my design. These things are:

-the people
I wanted them all to be able to see each other and potentially be able to talk to each other...which is why my table is a hexagon so that everyone can see each other.

- the food
I felt the food needed to stand out on this table which is why I wanted it to be white so that the food is the color and the main focus on the table.

-the element of surprise
I wanted the table to be like nothing you have ever seen before...so I turned what you know [a light hanging down over and table that is sitting on the floor and coming up] upside down...the table hangs from the ceiling and their is a dim glowing light that shines up from the center of the table.

After designing the table I moved on to designing the room around the table...the room is the same shape as the table [hexagon] which you can see in the plan...the serving tables are part of a thick band that not only support the table but contrast the thin delicate cables that hold the table up...speaking of the cables, I repeated them throughout the room by having them create some barriers or walls of cables, that go from floor to ceiling, in the very large open dining room which you can see in my renderings...another thing that I did to close in the room some was create a few steps that lead you down into the room as well as creating a ledge that gives an enclosing feeling...

the seat and the back are held up by these thin wires which reminded me of how the table hangs.

for this assignment we were given a descriptor word and mood, mine were smooth and soft texture and the mood was serene...we were required to use at least 3 images and not to be cliché. i used four images, the purple background is silk, the white highlights on the left are ice, the green was bark from a tree, and the faint light pink on the right is a glass sculpture. i wanted the image to go from bright bold colors to light where your eyes can rest

our first assignment was to find a digital picture of an urban landscape and uses the basic photoshop skills we learned in class to develop a pattern from the one original image that was inspired by victorian patterns. the original image is a picture of the Space Needle and the Seattle, Washington skyline. i repeated and rotated the Space Needle as well as the moon that was in the sky. i also took from another building in the picture to get the half circles.

the artifact that i made was comprised of angled planes of different thicknesses and an organic shape that holds the planes together. i wanted the piece to be visually balanced while also looking like it may tip over or that the thick angled piece may fall or tip the whole thing over.

In today’s design world, computing allows a wide range of opportunities that would otherwise be missed if it weren’t for this cutting edge technology. Computers themselves have made advancements in almost everything and with the design programs that are now available they have enhanced the speed of the design process as well as communicating ideas. With these programs designers can dream and design anything, which is amazing. Some of the designs that people are able to draw up on the computer are so advanced that we don’t even have to technology to build or make their designs, which may force some designers to change their designs so they can be made into reality. While other designers with theoretical designs are simply waiting for the day that the world will be come so advanced that their dream will of seeing their design actually be made, will come true. I believe that with everyday that passes we, as humans and designers, get more and more advanced and the role that computing plays in design will continue to grow.

Lidded Punch Bowl and Ladle: Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló was designed by Antoni Gaudi and is located on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, Spain. Designed for a specific client, Josep Batlló, to serve as an upper class apartment in which he and his family lived on the bottom two floors while the rest were rented out. The exterior appears to be like skin pealing back exposing the bone support columns. Casa Batlló sits in between two other buildings that are static and flat. This makes Casa Batlló stand out because the organic curves of the balconies that protrude out over the sidewalk. The unique shapes of each balcony and window are not only portrayed on the outside but they are flowing through to the inside as well. The texture change between the smooth concrete of the balconies to the rough texture of the upper part of the wall are like the material change that happens in the Lidded Punch Bowl and Ladle. The embellished silver metal swirls around the bowl and changes into smooth, flush, green glass. The Casa Batlló also has colored glass that stands out from the other materials. The shape of the glass on the punch bowl is very similar to the shape of the skin and bone oval shape that is around the lower windows, almost as the punch was made to be inside. The building itself is Art Nouveau as a whole, each and every room, including the dining room that holds the punch bowl is full of organic shapes and curves and over all has dynamic movement.

In comparison to the punch bowl the candlesticks that are located in the White House are something that not every household would have. Much like the punch bowl these candlesticks can be seen as a symbol of wealth or power.

Contrasting the punch bowl is the Barcarlounger. The chair is a common piece of furniture that is located in suburban homes. The punch bowl would most likely not be located in one of those homes but more in the upper class homes.

The Lidded Punch Bowl and Ladle was designed in the early 1900s, around the time of the Art Nouveau movement. The punch bowl reflects aspects of Art Nouveau because of the free flowing curves and the organic shape. The punch bowl would be located with in a space that also is the Art Nouveau style, such as, Antoni Gaudi’s “Casa Battlo’s” dining room in Barcelona. The room is filled with curved windows and doors, and organic light fixtures. The bowl blends in perfectly with the style of the while standing out because of the shining silver and the bright green glass. The dining room is where high class people could host parties or dinners for guest. People would use the punch bowl to serve their guest drinks along with food while entertaining them. The punch bowl and ladle can be considered sophisticated and formal artifacts because of the glass and the silver metal work. Although the bowl is more formal it could also serve its purpose in an everyday casual setting, but is more of a status symbol of wealth and nice belongings. Even when not in use the punch bowl could be setting out as an interesting decoration that adds life in to the room. While the bowl was designed in Germany by a team of designers with the company Württembergische Metallwaren Fabrik as a showpiece to promote the company’s name, it still looks like it belongs in this Spanish dining room.

In comparison Sara's Triple Over Lay Lamp is used as a decorative piece while also having a function, where as the lamp is to light the space and the bowl is used for holding liquid. They both can be considered the focal point of the spaces they are in, and all of the other pieces in the room can help accent the artifact. In contrast Meagn's Mobile is decorative but serves no functional purpose. It is also located in a public museum whereas the punch bowl is located in a private home. Thus changing its original purpose before it was meant for a museum.source

Lidded Punch Bowl and Ladle

The designer of the Lidded Punch Bowl and Ladle is an unknown artist from Germany. It was designed in 1900 and is manufactured by Würtemburgische Metalwarren Fabrik. This punch bowl has silver curved lines that over lap onto the green glass. This reflects its art nouveau style, which are designs that reflect plant forms. The green glass and vine like curved lines are plant like and make this piece organic. In contrast to the organic shapes of the punch bowl Philippe Starck’s ashtray is very organic and static. Although both pieces have lids the punch bowls is more decorative and points upward while the ashtray’s lid is somewhat flush with the top edges. Not only does the lid of the punch bowl point away from the two handles bring your eyes out and around the bowl. The ashtray has only vertical and horizontal lines which make it not as flowing. Lucien Bonvallet’s Chocolate Pot is especially similar; they both have handles, lids, and a stirring/serving instrument. The lids are a lot alike because of the shape and they both have a “knob” at the top for easy removal. They are both silver and have decorative etching and have another color to go a long with the polished silver.

bus/shelter
As apart of our research for the bus/shelter client charrette we were sent out to get the opinion that matters the most. The city bus riders. Our group set out for the nearest GTA bus stop and when we got on we asked the lady sitting next to us if we could interview her. She said "yes." but she wished to remain anonymous. Thinking she was about to get off at the next stop, Kara quickly sketched her. She had short gray hair, glasses, and appeared to been in her sixies. We found out that she rides the bus everyday to and from her job as a Gulford County School teacher. She said it takes a about an hour of waiting and riding the bus every morning. At first she seemed a little shy, but as the ride went on she opened up a little bit and started talking about her children. When it was time for her to get off we thanked her for her time and went on our way to the depot.

These are the interviews that we recorded.

First we interviewed Latisha at the depot. She is a student at GTCC and she is studying to be a nurse. She rides the bus to and from school everyday. We asked her what her bus riding experience was like she she told us that it was crowed and there is not enough seating and that when it is raining there is never room under the shelter. She said that she would like to see a bigger shelter with more seating.

We moved to another area of the depot and talked to Nathan. He explained to us that he is new to riding the bus because recently his car broke down. He works at PTI and rides the bus to the depot where he boards a PART bus to the airport. He tells us about how long the ride is and where the bus makes stops a long the way. He was thankful for the bus system he talked about how a few years ago there was nothing like this. He does think that there could be more seating and that some of the shelters are hot but some have air vents.

I find it very interesting how Nathan didn't say a lot of negative things about the bus shelters because he is just happy to be getting to work. Where as the college population may not be as appreciative because we are used to things being new and high-tech. There is always room for improvements and I am excited to be apart of something that is going to be in someones everyday life.

The riding step is what I did first in this reading, riding, and recording project. Riding the city bus for the first time in my entire life is something I’ll probably never forget. I was scared but excited because I was riding with my friends Anna, Ben, Leah and Sara. I didn’t know what to expect when the bus doors opened and when they did I saw a mean old lady yelling at us to hurry up and get on the bus. I was the last of us to get on the bus and we all scanned our student I.D.s and before I could get sat down the bus driver takes off and I almost fell so I had to grab a seat fast. I was sitting across from everyone else next to a person that I didn’t know. Normally if I had a choice of sitting next to someone I didn’t know or skipping a seat I would skip a seat because everyone likes their personal space. I noticed that the person next to me was on their cell phone and then I looked around and everyone else was either on their phones texting or not talking to each other. There was no interaction between anyone on the bus which made me feel awkward and also made me realize that my friends and I were in the minority. Not only were we in the race minority but also age. I thought would have been mostly teenaged college students but there were also a wide range of adults. All of the people on the bus looked like they ride the bus often and I felt like I stuck out because it was new to me and I’m sure you could tell. I looked like a tourist with my camera out and taking pictures and I was looking in every direction trying to see everything and take it all in. I don’t think I was as aware of my surroundings as I would have been if I had been alone. The ride went by really fast; I think it was the end of the bus driver’s shift hence why she was cranky. We were sitting toward the front of the bus so when we got to the depot and was trying to get off we started to go out the front door but the buses load from the front and exit out the back.

Since I did the reading after I rode the bus I didn’t really think about the civil rights movements while I was on the bus but I can’t imagine how hard those times were. I don’t believe that our society has completely integrated itself and it maybe in the law but I think us as humans separate ourselves from each other because of what happened in the past. In some ways we may be scared that if all of this kind of stuff went away that we maybe forgetting our ancestors but there are always people who are never willing to change and as long as they are like that we will always have an issue.

We started off waiting at the bus stop and sat down even though we didn't have to wait very long. Taking pictures of each other taking picture of each other is how we started to record/document.

This is what I remeber from when we started to get on the bus and swiping our I.D.s

As I said before, people were either talking on the phone, texting, or just sitting talking to no one.

I drew these from memory and everything was a little bit fuzzy to me I didn't remeber what color shirts people were wearing or exactly what they looked like but I do remeber where everything was. The driver at the front then the man to my left was behind the driver. Leah was across from me and then there was a pole right next to me and then on the other side of the pole was the person on their cell phone. Once the bus statred going I got really turned around in my mind and I didn't know where we were but when I saw "Just Be" I knew exactly where we were.

the first week of my second year

This past week of school was very eventful and interesting. As expected our studio class was presented a week long project on the first day of class. Wayfinding isn’t something I had put a lot of thought into before we got this project, but now I find myself thinking about it every time I go somewhere. Each class member was given a location that we had to find. All of the locations were somewhere in the Greensboro area. Fortunately my location wasn’t far from my apartment so I mapquested it, as most of us did, and went there. I took pictures along the way to document my path and sketched them. I liked getting out and seeing more of Greensboro that I haven’t seen. The next phase of the project we were put into groups of 15 or so and things really got interesting. Each group member had to make a 1' x 1' square that created a "mental map" of our path and then put them all together in a composition. Trying to come up with an idea with 14 other people is crazy enough but when it is about 60 people its nerve racking. I learned a lot working in the smaller groups because we were able to listen to everyone’s ideas and try to mesh them all together or at least something that everyone deal with. When in the large group we had about 2 hours to complete our task, which was to make a seamless presentation as a whole. I feel that I learned that not everyone is going to get their way and I hope everyone else learned that too. We tried several ideas and went with the one that we felt worked the best. This whole week was a learning experience and I look forward to the rest of the year.

Habitable Wall - Mark Rothko

This is my final presentation board for my Habitable Wall Project but it took me a lot to get to this final product.

I started out with these sketches and I knew that I wanted Rothko's public and private areas to be very separated and that I wanted his sleeping area to be small and enclosed but yet comfortable.

I realized that by having the public space on the bottom that it was enclosed like how I wanted the sleeping area to be so I decided to make the sleeping area on the bottom level and the public on top so that it could be open.

My first model was very square and boxy and frame but this really helped me realize what space could be used and not wasted.

My second model started to get like more how I wanted it to be. I tried to make the frame on top come down to the bottom to help it flow through out the model and not "just" on top.

I finally got to my final model and I made a lot of changes in height for the bottom level. At first it wasn't high enough for and person to walk under. I did not want people to wonder around to the back where Rothko's sleeping and work areas are. So I added the steps and I wanted them to be yellow so that they were the first thing that you saw when you walked up to this habitable wall.

We were required to have a food preparation area and a place to entertain and that is what the upper level is for.

This large window would be facing the studio window in the second year area so that Rothko and his guest could see out.

This is Rothko's sleeping and work space. I wanted the work space to have good lighting and I wanted his sleeping area to be dark so that he could sleep but I also wanted the color to be relaxing and calming. We also had to include storage which it located above the sleeping area.

In my perspectives I wanted to show how the space would be used so I put it in the context of the studio and I put the scale figure to show that you come up the step and you can sit and be entertained.

In this perspective I wanted you to see that the sleeping area is small and that you have to duck down and crawl inside.

Over all this project was very challenging but I am glad that we were assigned this project because I learned a lot about how people interact with their surroundings and I like having to think about how people live in spaces and where they are able to walk and where they can't walk and what purpose things need to have and why. This project got me to think and I liked the challenge.

Elsewhere

When I first arrived at Elsewhere I was just so overwhelmed and in shock by all of the stuff. I really enjoyed going there mostly because of all of the memories that I had when I saw things from my childhood. I know that I had a lot of the toys there but there is so much stuff that I have never seen before that I know other people may remember. Elsewhere is a really good place to draw and create art mostly because everywhere you look there is something interesting that you could draw or inspires you to do something creative.

We were told to pick an area that we wanted to map out. I chose the selves where all of the toys that I had were located. I started off with trying to draw all of it and trying to show all of the layers of things.

We also had to find a visual pun with in our space and my was in all of the layers of toys Waldo was in plain sight. I also drew this one on two different days the right side was first then the left as you can see the things don't match up to show that things move around in here like crazy.

I zoomed in on some of the toys that I liked and also the ones that I thought were really random and interesting.
